Breastfeeding & Lactation Services

A mother's decision on how to feed her baby is hers alone and a decision we will fully respect and support. As health care experts, however, we know the inherent benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and child.

Breast milk is the perfect food for babies and helps to protect them from illness and disease. Breastfeeding is good for moms, as well. Since breastfeeding burns calories, it can help her lose the baby weight more quickly than if she was not breastfeeding. Studies have also shown that women who breastfed have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

Babies were born to be breastfed, but sometimes moms have questions or concerns. To help with these questions, we've developed a comprehensive program available at Wilson Health. Our international board-certified lactation consultant is here to give guidance and support to mothers who choose to breastfeed.

Education

Wilson Health offers Breastfeeding Success Classes and a Mother's Support Group for mothers who plan to breastfeed and for those who are considering this option. Both of these groups are facilitated by an international board-certified lactation consultant.

Follow-Up Support

Our lactation consultant offers consultation services to every breastfeeding mother at Wilson’s Family Birth Center. The consultation includes a baby weight check and breastfeeding observation (the latch, the attachment and positioning). The lactation consultant will answer any questions and/or concerns the mother may have and show her how to fix any problems she may be experiencing with breastfeeding. Wilson’s lactation consultant also does phone follow-up as needed.

Sweet Beginnings Boutique

Wilson Health has extended our lactation services by offering a place where breastfeeding mothers can seek advice, and follow-up, and receive assistance from certified lactation consultants.
