SIDNEY (September 28, 2015) – The Wilson Health diabetes self-management education program has been awarded Continued Recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The program was originally recognized at Wilson Health in September 2002 and has maintained recognition for the past 13 years. This program offers high-quality diabetes education services to the patients in Shelby County and the surrounding communities. With the renewed recognition, the program at Wilson Health continues to be recognized by the ADA through September 2019.

The ADA Education Recognition effort is a voluntary process which assures that approved education programs have met the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. Programs that achieve Recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants modern information about diabetes management.

“The process gives us – the educators – a national standard by which to measure the quality of the services we provide,” said Linda Barhorst, RN, CDE, Diabetes Education Coordinator at Wilson Health. “And it helps our patients to identify and continue to utilize these quality programs.”

Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. One consequence of compliance with the National Standards is the greater consistency in the quality and quantity of education offered to people with diabetes. The participants in an ADA Recognized program, such as Wilson’s, are taught self-care skills that promote better management of his or her diabetes treatment regimen.

Assuring high-quality education for patient self-care is one of the primary goals of the Education Recognition program. Through the support of Wilson’s healthcare team and increased knowledge and awareness of diabetes, the patient can assume a major part of the responsibility for his or her diabetes management. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented or eliminated through self-management education.
