Patients at risk for blood clots and prescribed Coumadin, or anticoagulation (blood thinning) therapy by their physician, can benefit from services provided through Wilson Memorial Hospital’s Coumadin Clinic.

“Millions of Americans are on Coumadin therapy, a medication that prevents blood from clotting,” said Dr.Rehan Ahmed, cardiologist and medical director of the WMH Coumadin Clinic. “Coumadin is a powerful and effective drug, but it also has potential side effects if the patient's response to the medication changes. That is why it is important for proper monitoring and management.”

The Coumadin Clinic at WMH works in collaboration with referring physicians to provide close supervision for effectiveness of the Coumadin therapy, providing education, consultation, medication monitoring and other services, such as immediate protime/INR test results.

Located at the hospital in Outpatient Services, the Coumadin Clinic is staffed by nurses who have been trained in anticoagulation care. These nurses work as a team with WMH pharmacists and primary care providers to oversee each patient’s treatment.

All patients receiving treatment from the clinic must have a physician's referral. To schedule an appointment, or for more information, call the Coumadin Clinic at (937) 494-5209.
