SIDNEY (July 20, 2015) — Wilson Health recently announced the recipient of the 7th Annual Physician Memorial Scholarship. This year’s scholarship winner is Mark Frilling of Minster.
Following the death of Bruce C. Urbanc, D.O., in 2008, the scholarship is a joint effort of the Wilson Health medical staff and the hospital. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a fully-accredited school of medicine or osteopathic medicine in the continental United States. The student must be a Shelby County high school graduate.
Frilling attributes his career aspirations of becoming a doctor to his job shadowing and volunteer experiences at Wilson. “A career in the healthcare field always enticed me, but it wasn’t until after job shadowing a few medical professionals, including Dr. Heckler and Dr. Weber, as well as volunteering in the Emergency Department at Wilson, that I knew I wanted to be a doctor,” said Frilling.
Frilling is now in his second year of medical school at The University of Toledo’s College of Medicine. The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and Professor for the Department of Neurosciences at the University of Toledo, Dr. Carol Bennett-Clarke said, “In medical school, Mark has already established himself as an outstanding student by currently ranking in the top 1 percent of the first year class overall. He has both the temperament and ability to become an excellent physician and an active member of a healthcare team.”
However, Frilling’s deservingness of this scholarship award goes beyond his intelligence and classroom studies. Frilling also has a keen eye for helping others. On his spring break last year, Frilling seized a lifetime opportunity to volunteer on a medical mission trip to Honduras. In addition, Frilling has also volunteered at the Community Care Clinic.
Frilling received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Findlay. He is a graduate of Fort Loramie High School and hopes to one day return to his hometown to practice medicine. “While my education journey has slowly carried me farther north, up I-75, I look forward to the day when I get to return as a practicing physician back in the area where I grew up,” said Frilling. “There truly is no place like home.”
