When Should I Go to the Emergency Room?

Knowing where to go if you get sick or hurt can help you get the best medical care and save you time and money. How do you choose where to go when the unexpected happens?

Unless it's a true emergency the Emergency Room (ER) should not be the first stop.

Examples of when to go to the ER:

  • Any life threatening or disabling condition
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Cut or wound that won't stop bleeding
  • Sudden or unexplained loss of consciousness
  • High fever with stiff neck, mental confusion or difficulty breathing
  • Major injuries
  • Chest pain; numbness in the face, arm or leg; difficulty speaking
  • Coughing up or vomiting blood
  • Possible broken bones

Tips

• Call 911 for help with a true health emergency.

• Free-standing ER’s may be available for non-threatening emergencies, but these facilities may bill higher and often do not accept Medicare or Medicaid.

Cost

$$$ - An ER visit is most likely going to be the most costly, depending on your insurance plan and if your deductible has been met.

If you need help but it isn't an emergency, here are some options:

Going to the ER might be your first instinct, but you have other options that can save you time and money over going to the ER. While urgent and emergency situations are serious, an urgent care center is for problems that need attention right away, but are not life threatening.

  • Call your doctor. Your doctor can help you decide whether you should go to an urgent care center or go into the office
  • Go to an urgent care center. Urgent care is for when you need to be treated right away, but your problem isn't serious. These centers are typically open late at night, weekends, and holidays. Visit Wilson Health Urgent Care to learn more.
